Lima and Miraflores W. Peru

Copy of E-mail to Arran, Rosemary bcc: GG, Lianne, Marj ….
Sorry to miss you last night, Arran.  Was totally exhausted.  Had a great day visiting Lima centre, first.  See pics 219 and 220 the police muzzled police dogs ...

I did not visit any cities but I really enjoyed going around El Centro, yet another huge square surrounded by colonial buildings, balconies, churches, a cathedral, grassy flowery seating area in the centre where people lounge around in various states of life and living, in the sunshine.  I went down some wide side street arteries off the square with no traffic.  Bought a top and a couple of pairs of shorts and a pair of socks.

Lima is "...  a sprawling desert city .... planted on the sandy foothills of the Andes, a rambling metropolis composed of more than 30 municipalities or district...  colonial architecture ... grand boulevards lined with extravagant (if decayed) structures built in a panoply of architectural styles from Victorian to beaux Arts..."

In the afternoon I took a taxi to another area called Mirafloras, tucked into sandy cliffs, south of Lima beside but above the sea.  There were shops and restaurants and parks around this area, one of the, no, THE most tasteful and lovely (mostly open air style) mall I have every seen.  Matthew would have LOVED it here! so would you, A and T.  I did not walk down to the beach but enjoyed the experience in the sunshine and everyone just strolling along so happy together.  There is an area called something Te Amor where there is a statute of a couple in a loving embrace and all around the grass, on ledges overlooking the sea were couples  and small families, smiling, arms around each other, holding hands, lovers in a deep kiss or just being together.  Just a delightful corner of the world!  There was another large area out of doors with posters showing the dangers especially to the sea life and to the environment; you may know that in December here was a world conference here in Lima on the ecosystem.
